The Kitchen Reno Electrical Checklist

5 things to decide before your kitchen layout is locked in

Ginger Electrics does the electrical side of kitchen renovations across Wellington and Lower Hutt. A new cooktop, oven or layout can change what your wiring has to carry. Tick off each decision with your builder or designer while the plans can still change.

Tap a switch, or a point on the plan, to mark each decision.

Know what your wiring can carry

Tip: Check this at planning, not when the cooktop arrives.

Layout & rangehood

What can sit next to what

Good to know: Renting it out? Under Healthy Homes, a rental kitchen with a cooktop needs a rangehood or fan that vents outside.

Do I need to upgrade my wiring for an induction cooktop?

It depends on your existing wiring and electrical capacity. Induction cooktops use more power and need a dedicated circuit. If you're replacing an oven or cooktop with an induction hob, Shane checks the existing wiring and works out what's needed before it's installed.

Planning your kitchen layout: cooktop, rangehood and windows

Cooktops, rangehoods and windows can't simply be positioned anywhere in relation to one another. A design may look good on paper but create practical or compliance problems when it's time to install. Shane reviews the layout, flags anything that won't work and helps you and your builder find a solution before construction.

Kitchen electrical FAQs

Can you install a new oven?

Yes. Oven installs are regular work for Ginger Electrics, on their own or as part of a renovation. If the new oven needs more power than the old one, the circuit is checked first.

Can you help choose kitchen appliances?

Yes, on the electrical side, if Ginger Electrics is brought in early enough. Shane can tell you what your wiring can run and what a new appliance would need.

Do you install induction cooktops?

Shane checks your wiring and does the electrical work an induction cooktop needs, such as its dedicated circuit. Talk to him about the cooktop itself when you book.
